Recently TL Travel payed a visit to Germany & the Bavarian Alps for eight days of mountains, lakes & castles. We flew into Munich from Canada on an Iceland Air red-eye flight & landed at Munich International Airport at 10 am; early enough to enjoy a full day in the city before heading out the countryside.
Whether you are planning a longer stay or are just in town for the day, here is our full day itinerary for your visit to Munich, Germany.
MARIENPLATZ + THE GLOCKENSPIEL
Start your adventure in the heart of Munich at Marienplatz Square where (if you arrive by 11 AM) you can catch the Glockenspiel at Munich's New Town Hall. As one of the largest remaining Glockenspiel's, it is a right of passage for visitors to the city to take in this show consisting of painted mechanical figurines reenacting events from Munich's past. Whether you find this show entertaining or not, Marienplatz is the perfect starting point for your day in the city.
While at Marienplatz, consider taking the Town Hall elevator (or stairs) up into the tower for a panoramic view of the city & the square.
Located a short walking distance from Marienplatz you will find Viktualienmarkt; a TL Travel foodie favorite! Viktualienmarkt is an open-air market made up of a number of small stalls & shops. Pick up some snacks for an afternoon picnic in the park, or stop to snack right there at a table in the market itself.
TOUR A MUSEUM OR GALLERY
The city of Munich has no shortage of Museum's & Art Galleries. On our most recent visit we chose to spend an hour or two at the Museum of Modern Art, but other options include the Alte Pinakothek (one of Europe's famous galleries), The Bavarian National Museum, & Nymphenburg Palace to name a few. Choose the one that interests you most & be sure to visit after your stop at the Viktualienmarkt.
After you have finished up at the museum of your choice, head over to Munich's English Garden where you can enjoy a scenic walk through one of the largest urban parks in the world. Stretching from the center of the city all the way out to the city limits, Englisher Garten has everything from a tea house & Chinese pagoda to river surfing & beer gardens. Pack a picnic or simply walk the grounds & stop for food when you're done.
DINNER AT THE GOLDEN BAR
Should you choose to forgo a picnic in the park, head to The Golden Bar on Prinzregentenstraße for delicious food & spectacular ambiance. Housed in Haus der Kunst, you will fall in love with this hidden gem at the base of the English Gardens.
TL Travel Tip: For only 12,80 €, pick up an Airport-City-Day-Ticket before leaving Munich International Airport that will allow you use of the entire MVV network including S-Bahn (urban trains), U-Bahn (underground), buses & trams.
